GTA 6's Mount Kalaga: the national park Rockstar has described but barely shown
Mount Kalaga National Park is the one region of Leonida that Rockstar has placed in words, and the one it has shown least. Here is the whole of what has been written about it, what the six official stills add, what Rob Nelson has said about hunting and fishing, and what remains unconfirmed.

Mount Kalaga National Park is the only region of Leonida that Rockstar has located in a sentence. Every other description on the studio's site tells you what a place is like and leaves you to work out where it is; the park's opens by putting it "up against the state's northern border". It is also the region with the least footage behind it. No trailer shot has been captioned as Mount Kalaga, the Extended Look did not visibly go there, and what exists is a two-sentence description, six stills and an interview about hunting and fishing.
That makes it the mirror image of the Grassrivers, where Rockstar wrote almost nothing and showed one machine over and over. Here the text does most of the work. This piece sets out what it says, what the pictures add to it, where the activities it promises have since been described in detail, and where the popular version of the park runs ahead of anything Rockstar has published.
What Rockstar has written
Rockstar's site heads the region Wild, Wild Country and gives it two sentences:
A national landmark up against the state's northern border, Mount Kalaga National Park offers prime hunting, fishing, and off-road trails. In the lush surrounding backwoods, hillbilly mystics and paranoid radicals live far from the prying eyes of the government.
Three things are worth noticing. The first sentence is a list of activities rather than a mood, which is the opposite of how the Grassrivers is written: that description promises gators and "weirder discoveries", this one reads like the leaflet at a park entrance. The second is what the list leaves out. Kayaking is not in Rockstar's text. It is in one of the stills, and it is in the Extended Look's activity montage, but the description names hunting, fishing and off-road trails and stops. The regions summary on this site had folded the kayak into the described list, and we have corrected it in the same commit as this piece.
The third is the second sentence. It is the only prose Rockstar has published about who lives in the north of the state, and it describes a population rather than a person: mystics and radicals, in the backwoods, hiding from the government. Every other described region comes with a name or an institution — Brian Heder in the Keys, the Allied Crystal refinery in Ambrosia. No character has been placed in Mount Kalaga, and no mission has been described there. GTA V put a cult in its mountains, the Altruists above Chiliad, so there is a precedent for what a sentence like that turns into; there is no confirmation that it turns into anything.
What the six stills add
Rockstar's page for the park carries six screenshots, published with the second trailer on 6 May 2025. Press coverage of that drop describes them consistently: kayakers on a river, hunters in camouflage beneath pine trees, a big cat that GamesRadar identifies as a Florida panther stalking deer, dirt bikes and a quad on a muddy trail, and a road cut through high wooded ground. The identification of the cat is the outlet's, not Rockstar's, which has published no list of animals for any region.
Set the stills against the text and the park's activity list splits in two. Hunting and fishing are described and pictured. Off-road trails are described and pictured. Kayaking is pictured only. That is a smaller gap than the Grassrivers' airboat, which is pictured and never described, but it is the same kind of gap, and it matters because the popular version of the park — "hunting, fishing, kayaking and off-road racing" — treats the four as equally sourced. Off-road racing, in particular, appears nowhere in the description; the text says trails, and the still shows bikes on mud.
The stills are also where the elevation comes from. Rockstar's text does not mention a mountain beyond the name, and the canyon walls that viewers matched to Providence Canyon in Georgia are in the trailers rather than in the description. Florida has no mountains at all, which is why the park's real-world basis is the least Floridian of the six, and why any statement about how high it goes is a reading of landscape rather than a figure from Rockstar.
What hunting and fishing actually are
The description names the two activities; Rob Nelson has since explained them. In his interview with the creator TGG, reported by GameSpot, the head of development at Rockstar North said that hunting is one of the ways to make money in the game, and that it is introduced through a character who already knows Jason, so that it arrives as part of the story rather than as a detached minigame. Who that character is has not been said.
Fishing is the more surprising of the two. Nelson said it is catch and release: there are challenges and collectibles attached, it is as detailed as Red Dead Redemption 2's, and you cannot keep what you catch. Keeping fish, he said, "didn't fit this game" — Jason and Lucia live in a state with a restaurant on every corner, and the survival logic that made a caught fish worth something in 1899 does not apply. GameSpot also reported an inspect action on animals carried over from Red Dead Redemption 2.
What Nelson did not say is where any of this happens. The placement of hunting and fishing in Mount Kalaga comes from Rockstar's description of the park, not from the interview. It is a reasonable pairing, and it is the one the Grassrivers piece has to defer to when it notes that a marsh full of alligators has not been confirmed as a hunting ground. Whether the park is the only place you can hunt, or simply the place Rockstar chose to advertise it, is open.
The region the Extended Look skipped
Ahead of the 27 August showcase, Rockstar published a description of the population that named the park directly: the people you meet in the wilderness around Mount Kalaga are meant to look and dress unlike the residents of Little Cuba, and the claim is one of the axes on which the game's designed populations are supposed to differ. So the park was in the text Rockstar wrote for the Extended Look.
It was not, as far as anyone can identify, in the Extended Look itself. The 26 minutes moved between Vice City, the Keys and the Port Gellhorn area, and the activity montage's outdoor moments — kayaking, which GamesRadar's coverage places in the ocean, and a dirt-bike race on a course — have not been placed in the park by Rockstar or by anyone going frame by frame. The Extended Look breakdown covers what the showcase did show. The honest summary for Mount Kalaga is that the most substantial piece of footage Rockstar has released did not visit it, and that the description of a wilderness population differing from the city's has not been demonstrated on screen.
Where it is
This is the one place where the park is better sourced than any other region. "Up against the state's northern border" is Rockstar's own phrase, and no other description on the site places its region at all. Fan maps put the park across the top of the state, and for once the placement has a sentence from Rockstar behind it rather than only the leaked map.
The county it is usually filed under is another matter. Lummox County appears on the leaked map and nowhere else — not on a sign, not on a livery, not in a still — and the piece on Leonida's real geography sets out why that name is the only one of the six county names with no official trace. The park's size, its borders with Ambrosia and Port Gellhorn to the south, and how much of the map's total area it takes are unpublished, as they are for every region.

What is still not confirmed
Whether the park is where hunting lives, or just where it was advertised. Nelson described a money-making system tied to a character. Rockstar's description ties the activity to a place. Nothing joins the two, and a hunting economy confined to one corner of a map three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2's would be a different design from one that follows the animals wherever they are.
Who introduces it. A character who already knows Jason is a narrow description, and none of the announced cast fits it obviously. The Keys are where Jason's known associates live; the park is at the other end of the state.
What the mystics and radicals do. Rockstar wrote a sentence about them and has not returned to it. Whether they are a faction, a mission strand, ambient colour or a single encounter is unknown.
What the elevation is for. The regions overview asks whether the park's height supports anything the series has not done before. GTA V had Mount Chiliad and Red Dead Redemption 2 had the Grizzlies, so mountains as such are not new; what would be new is any mechanic that depends on them, and none has been shown.
The animals. Two species in a still, plus whatever fans have catalogued from trailer frames. Rockstar has published no roster, and the inspect action Nelson mentioned is the only confirmed interaction with any of them.
The park is charted on the interactive map with the caveats above attached, and the Mount Kalaga region page carries the running breakdown. Until 19 November, the reliable version of this article is two sentences, six pictures and one interview — which is more prose than the Grassrivers got, and less footage than anywhere else in the state.
