GTA 6's real-life locations: every Leonida county and the Florida it is built from

Rockstar has never named a real place in anything it has published about Leonida, and it has never named a county in prose. Its own site describes six places — Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park — and not one of those descriptions says which county it sits in.

Every county name you have seen was read off something else: a highway sign paused out of a trailer, the door of a police car, a road sign in an official screenshot, or a map that leaked from a development build. That is a more interesting fact than it sounds, because the county names are the layer where Leonida maps most cleanly onto Florida, and the layer where the least has been said officially.

Where the county names come from

Six county names exist. Five appear in material Rockstar has published. One does not.

The right-hand column is inference from start to finish, and so is much of the middle. A name on a road sign proves the county exists in the game's world. It does not say where its borders run, or which of the six described places falls inside it. Only Ambrosia carries its county in its own name, so for every other region the assignment to a county is a reading of trailer geography, and in three cases it rests on the leaked map more than on anything Rockstar released.

The state's own name follows the same pattern. Leonida reads as Ponce de León pressed into Florida, and nobody at Rockstar has ever said so.

Vice-Dale County is Miami-Dade

The cleanest mapping on the board, and the one that shows how the renaming works. Miami-Dade County has been hyphenated since a 1997 referendum stapled the city's name onto Dade County; Rockstar kept the hyphen and swapped the city. Vice City, the largest city the studio has built, sits at the centre of it the way Miami does.

The mapping now runs in both directions. Since 22 September the county-owned arena in downtown Miami has carried a rooftop sign reading WELCOME TO VICE CITY, under a set of municipal marketing agreements worth close to $4 million between them.

The real place has two police forces that people outside Florida routinely confuse: the City of Miami Police, and the county's Miami-Dade Police Department, which became the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office in January 2025. The trailers reproduce that split exactly. A Vice City Police Department and a separate Vice-Dale Police Department both appear on vehicles, and the county name reached the public through the second of those, on a car door in the first trailer, before any sign confirmed it.

Within the county, the neighbourhood-level mapping — Ocean Beach onto South Beach, Little Cuba onto Little Havana, the Stockyard onto Wynwood — is covered in every Vice City district Rockstar has actually named, and the same rule applies there: the correspondences are obvious, and they are ours, not Rockstar's. The region itself is charted on Vice City.

Mariana County is Monroe, and holds two regions

Monroe County is the real answer to a question fans have been asking about Leonida since the first trailer: how can the Keys and the Everglades share a county? Because in Florida they already do. Monroe County is the island chain from Key Largo to Key West, plus a mainland portion that is almost entirely Everglades National Park with nobody living in it.

That is why the Leonida Keys and Grassrivers are placed together in Mariana County on every fan map, and it is a sound reading. It is still a reading. Rockstar has said nothing about which county either region is in. The name Mariana appears on a single Interstate 404 sign in Port Gellhorn in the second trailer, pointing east, and the assignment of the two southern regions to it comes from the leaked map and from the real geography — not from anything the studio has written.

The name itself is looser than the geography. Monroe does not become Mariana by any obvious transform; the nearest real echoes are Marion County in the centre of the state and the panhandle town of Marianna, and neither is where the region is. Treat the name as a Rockstar invention with a Floridian sound rather than a renamed county.

What Rockstar has actually described for the Keys is in Brian Heder and the Keys: a boat yard, a smuggling operation from the golden age, and the start of the game.

Kelly County is the Panama City coast

Port Gellhorn is the clearest real-world identification outside Vice City, and the one with the strangest history. The buildings viewers matched it to are in Panama City, Florida, and the Bay County towns beside it — a working Gulf town next to the spring-break beach strip of Panama City Beach, which is precisely the mix Rockstar's description of cheap motels and shut-down attractions evokes.

Rockstar's own phrase for the region, "Leonida's forgotten coast", is lifted from a real one. The Forgotten Coast is a trademarked tourism name for the stretch of Gulf shoreline southeast of Panama City, coined in the 1990s by a local chamber of commerce for the towns the developers had passed over. Rockstar took the name and applied it to the town the developers had reached and then abandoned, which is a sharper joke than it first appears.

The strange part is that much of the reference material no longer exists. Hurricane Michael made landfall just east of Panama City in October 2018 as a category-five storm and flattened a large part of the town. Coverage of the leaked development build claims Rockstar scouted the area in 2015, three years earlier, and that a number of the structures matched in the footage were destroyed or rebuilt afterwards. That claim is leak-derived and we cannot verify it, but if it holds, Port Gellhorn preserves a Panama City that has since been demolished by weather.

The county is the weakest part of the mapping. Kelly County appears once, on a westbound exit sign in the first trailer, in Vice City. Port Gellhorn's placement in it comes from the leaked map and from the road signs pointing the same way. And Kelly does not read as any real county's name — Bay County offers no obvious route to it — so this is one Rockstar has simply made up. Port Gellhorn is on the map regardless of what its county turns out to be called.

Ambrosia County is Hendry, and the best-sourced county of all

Clewiston sits on the southern shore of Lake Okeechobee in Hendry County, and it calls itself America's Sweetest Town. The United States Sugar Corporation is headquartered there, its mill dominates the skyline, and cane fields run to the horizon in every direction. Rockstar's description of Ambrosia — a company town where the Allied Crystal refinery employs the place — is Clewiston with a different sign on the gate, and Lake Leonida is Lake Okeechobee, the largest freshwater lake lying entirely within the contiguous United States after Lake Michigan. The name Allied Crystal reads like a nod to Florida Crystals, the other giant of the state's sugar industry, and that too is our inference.

This is also the one county with real sourcing. Ambrosia County appears on a road sign for the Ambrosia County Sheriff's Office in an official screenshot Rockstar published with the second trailer, and the town shares the name. That is as close as any county gets to a Rockstar confirmation: still an image rather than a sentence, but an image the studio chose to release, in a place it has described in prose. The sheriff's office itself has an obvious model in the Hendry County Sheriff's Office, and that is inference again.

Hendry is inland and landlocked, which is worth noting because it is the only one of the mapped counties that is. Every other described region touches water; Ambrosia is the one built around a lake and a factory instead of a coast.

Lummox County is the one Rockstar has never shown

Mount Kalaga National Park is real in the sense that matters: Rockstar's site describes it. Lummox County is not. The name appears on the leaked map and nowhere else — not in a trailer, not on a livery, not on a sign in a screenshot. Every list that gives the park a county, including an earlier version of our own regional breakdown, took the name from the leak, and we have corrected ours in the same commit as this piece.

The real-world basis is also the least Floridian of the six. Florida has no mountains at all. Its highest natural point is Britton Hill in the panhandle, at 345 feet the lowest state high point in the country, and there is no national park in the north of the state — Florida's three are Everglades, Biscayne and Dry Tortugas, all at the southern tip. So a "national landmark up against the state's northern border" with real elevation had to be borrowed from somewhere else, and the somewhere is Providence Canyon in Stewart County, Georgia, whose exposed orange gullies match the canyon shots closely enough that the identification is not seriously disputed. Providence Canyon is itself an accident: it was cut into farmland by bad nineteenth-century ploughing, and the state now runs it as a park.

Rockstar has not said any of this. It has said the park offers hunting, fishing and off-road trails, and that the surrounding backwoods are home to hillbilly mystics and paranoid radicals. The rest — the Georgia border, the hill topography, any specific mountain — is viewers matching landscape. Mount Kalaga is charted with that caveat attached.

Leonard County is Broward, and has no region

The sixth county name is the odd one. Leonard County Sheriff's vehicles appear in the first trailer, with a green-and-white livery that is a near copy of the Broward Sheriff's Office cars that patrol Fort Lauderdale and its suburbs, immediately north of Miami-Dade. The livery is the entire evidence for the Broward reading. The name is not: Leonard does not derive from Broward in any way Rockstar's other renamings would predict, and any attempt to explain it is guesswork.

What makes it interesting is that none of Rockstar's six described places is in it. If the Broward reading is right, Leonard County is the sprawl north of Vice City — the part of real South Florida that is continuous city for fifty miles without ever being Miami. That is a large piece of map with a county name and no region attached, and it is the strongest hint in the official material that six regions is a floor rather than a list.

What the map compresses

Rockstar has said the map is twice GTA V's and that Vice City is twice Los Santos; what those ratios do and do not mean is its own piece. What they cannot capture is how far apart the real places are.

A state that puts Panama City and Miami within a drive of each other has been folded hard, and the fold has consequences that nobody outside Rockstar can describe yet. Reports on the leaked map say Leonida has no panhandle at all, which would put the forgotten coast on the same Gulf shoreline as the Everglades rather than 500 miles up it. We have not verified that, we do not link to leaked material, and the honest statement is that the state's shape has not been published.

What is still not confirmed

Whether any county name will survive to the pause map. A sign in a trailer reflects the build the trailer was captured from, and nothing obliges the final map to keep it. The studio has no obligation to the fan maps either.

Where the borders are. Six names and a set of road signs do not make a county map. Every coloured boundary you have seen is drawn from trailer geography and the leak, and the borders are the part that looks most authoritative and rests on least.

How many counties there are. Florida has 67. Leonida has six known names, one of them unofficial, and a described region — Mount Kalaga — with no official county at all. A seventh name would surprise nobody.

How much of Florida is actually in it. Six regions is what Rockstar has written about, not what it has built. The real state's other half — the Space Coast, Orlando, Tampa Bay, Jacksonville — has no Leonida counterpart in anything published, and that absence is a statement only until the map opens.
