GTA 6 release date: 19 November 2026, and everything confirmed about launch
Grand Theft Auto VI launches 19 November 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Here's the confirmed date, preload timing, why there is no online mode at launch, the delay history, and what is still unannounced.

Grand Theft Auto VI releases on Thursday 19 November 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. That date is confirmed by Rockstar and has been repeatedly reaffirmed by Take-Two.
After two delays, it is worth being precise about what is actually locked down and what is not.

When you can actually play
Rockstar has not announced the unlock time. The two live possibilities are a rolling launch at midnight local time in each region, or a single global unlock — reported as 05:00 UTC, which is midnight US Eastern. Those produce meaningfully different answers, and on the US west coast they produce different dates. We go through both in what time does GTA 6 unlock.
What is confirmed is preload on 12 November for digital pre-orders, a week ahead of launch. That is the date to have storage free by, not the 19th.
Either way, this is worth planning around if you care about avoiding spoilers. Players in earlier timezones will be posting story content while later regions are still waiting, and story footage has been circulating since the August leaks; the spoiler guide covers the console settings and mutes that hold up.
There is no online mode at launch
This is the detail most likely to catch people out, and it is settled.
GTA VI ships as a single-player game. Take-Two has described it in exactly those terms, and there is no announced multiplayer component arriving on 19 November. Separately, Take-Two has confirmed that GTA Online continues running after VI launches — the existing game is not being switched off to make room.
An eventual online successor is widely expected, and Rockstar's commercial history makes it close to inevitable. But no mode, no date and no scope has been announced, and anyone telling you otherwise is guessing. If your reason for buying at launch is multiplayer, that reason does not exist yet. Every statement on the record, and the precedent from 2013 and 2018, is in what has actually been said about GTA 6 online.
Platforms
| Platform | Status |
|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | 19 November 2026 |
| Xbox Series X|S | 19 November 2026 |
| PC | No date announced |
| PS4 / Xbox One | Not releasing |
The absence of a PC date is deliberate and consistent with Rockstar's history — GTA V arrived on PC roughly 19 months after console, Red Dead Redemption 2 about 13. Nothing has been confirmed either way for VI, and we go through what that implies in the PC release guide.
How we got here
The date has moved twice, and both moves were announced by Rockstar directly rather than leaking.
- Originally targeted for 2025, in the wake of the first trailer.
- May 2025: delayed to 26 May 2026. Rockstar's statement said they were sorry it was later than expected and thanked players for their patience.
- November 2025: delayed again to 19 November 2026 — a further 177 days, announced 201 days ahead. Rockstar apologised for adding time to what they acknowledged had been a long wait, framing it as the polish needed to finish properly.
Take-Two's position throughout has been that the extra time was Rockstar's call and about quality rather than trouble. Two delays on a game this size is not unusual, and the tone since has been consistent: November is the date. Both statements in full, and how the studio's record on GTA IV, Red Dead Redemption, GTA V and RDR2 reads against a third delay, are in the delay history.
The evidence supports that. Pre-orders opened on 25 June, the Extended Look gameplay reveal landed in August, and preload dates are now published — that is a marketing run behaving like one for a game that is finished, not one still finding its shape.
What launch week actually looks like
- 12 November — preload opens for digital pre-orders. It starts automatically only if your console is set for it: rest mode on PS5, instant-on with automatic updates on Xbox.
- Between then and launch — expect a day-one patch on top of the preload. Rockstar has not sized either.
- 19 November — the game unlocks at a time nobody has announced yet. Preloaded files stay locked until it does.
If you are buying a boxed copy, it contains a download code rather than a disc, so you are in the same preload window as everyone else once you redeem it.
What is still unknown
- The unlock time on launch day
- The install size, and the size of the day-one patch
- PC timing
- Whether, and when, any online component follows
We will update this page as each is confirmed. Until the date arrives, the interactive map of Leonida is the part of the game you can already explore.
The short, kept-current version of everything above is the GTA 6 release date guide — one page, updated the day anything changes.

GTA 6 is Game Informer's next cover story, and the details land on 29 September
Game Informer announced on 25 September that Grand Theft Auto VI is its next cover: 14 pages, 12 unseen screenshots, interviews with Rockstar lead designers, and the first mention of Leonida's weather and wildlife systems. Here is what was actually announced, what was only named, and when you can read it.

GTA 6's collector's edition costs $399.99 and does not contain the game
