GTA 6 voice cast: one actor is finally on the record

One actor has now confirmed a role in Grand Theft Auto VI, and it is not the one anybody was waiting for. On Sunday 13 September 2026, on a red carpet in Beverly Hills, Stephen Root told the Associated Press that he is in the game. Reporting from that interview places him as Brian Heder, the Keys smuggler Jason Duval works for.

That is the first time anyone involved in the cast has said so out loud. Rockstar has still published nothing: no credits, no casting announcement, no name attached to any of the eleven characters it has given bios to. Nine weeks from launch on 19 November 2026, the only cast fact on the record came from an actor on a press line, not from the studio.

What was actually said

Root was asked about the speculation around his involvement and answered plainly: "Yeah, you're gonna see me in there."

He then explained why the secret had not held:

I think from the first rollout of GTA that they were doing almost a year ago they had my character in there, and there were too many people that knew me from King of the Hill and my voice. So, I think that secret kind of got divulged then.

Root is a character actor with one of the most identifiable voices in American television — Bill Dauterive and Buck Strickland in King of the Hill, Milton in Office Space, Monroe Fuches in Barry. That is the whole mechanism of the leak he is describing. Rockstar can keep a name off a credit list; it cannot put that voice in a trailer and expect it to go unrecognised.

Two details are worth keeping straight. Root confirmed his own presence in the game in his own words; the attachment of that presence to Brian Heder specifically comes from the reporting around the interview, which is consistent across the Associated Press wire, Variety, GameSpot and Kotaku. And his "almost a year ago" is loose: the material that gave him away is the second trailer of 6 May 2025, sixteen months back, where Brian delivers the line about going to get his checks.

What one confirmation changes

Less than the headlines suggest, and more than nothing.

It settles one casting question, the one the audience had already answered for itself. It does not make the rest of the fan identifications any more solid, because they never depended on Root's being right — each one stands or falls on its own evidence. And it is not a Rockstar credit: the studio's position is unchanged, which matters because a credit list is the only thing that will settle the leads.

What it does establish is that the identifications are not worthless. A crowd recognised a voice from a trailer, held that reading for sixteen months, and was right. That is a data point about the method, not a validation of every name it has produced.

Where each name stands

The two competing names for Jason are the useful entry in that table. A single character cannot be voiced by two people, the claims are roughly as loud as each other, and both trace back to social accounts rather than to reporting. That is what an unsettled rumour looks like, and it is the normal state of everything on this list except the top row.

The only other actors on the record said no

Before this week, every on-record statement from an actor about GTA VI was a denial.

Roger Craig Smith — Sonic, Ezio in Assassin's Creed, Chris Redfield — spent part of May 2025 telling people he was not Jason, first with "Nope. Not me. Just to clarify. #GTA6" and then, when that did not take, with "LITERALLY attempting to clarify that it is NOT my voice in that trailer." Troy Baker had already denied the same role.

That asymmetry is worth naming. Actors who are not in the game are free to say so; actors who are in it are not. Which means the denials have been arriving for over a year while the confirmations have not, and the resulting picture — lots of famous names ruled out, nobody ruled in — is an artefact of who is allowed to speak rather than a description of the cast.

What is still not confirmed

Almost all of it.

Jason and Lucia. The two protagonists of the game, nine weeks out, have no confirmed performers. Nothing in Root's confirmation touches either of them.

Every other named character. Lori, Cal Hampton, Boobie Ike, Dre'Quan Priest, Raul Bautista, Real Dimez — bios on Rockstar's site, no credits anywhere.

The size of Root's part. He confirmed that he is in the game. He said nothing about how much of it he is in, and Brian's screen time is unknown; what is established about the character is set out in Brian Heder and the Keys.

Whether Rockstar publishes a cast before launch at all. It has given no indication that it will, and the pattern across the marketing so far is that character material names characters and never performers.

Motion capture versus voice. Rockstar's performances have historically been captured as a whole, but the studio has confirmed nothing about how VI was made in that respect, so a voice match is not automatically a performer match.

What we have corrected

This site listed Stephen Root as Brian Heder under "unconfirmed — fan identification". That was accurate until Sunday and is not any more. The Brian Heder piece, the cast guide and the Raul Bautista piece have been corrected in the same commit as this article, in both languages.
