GTA 6 DualSense controllers: two editions, $84.99, and nothing at all for Xbox

Sony announced two limited-edition Grand Theft Auto VI DualSense controllers on 3 September and opened pre-orders on 10 September. What they cost, which of the two is genuinely hard to get, why they ship on launch day, and why the game that refused to press a disc now has official hardware on only one of its two platforms.

Grand Theft Auto VI will not be sold on a disc, but it will be sold on a controller. On 3 September 2026 Sony announced two limited-edition DualSense wireless controllers in the game's colours, opened pre-orders on 10 September, and dated both to 19 November — the day the game itself arrives.

They cost $84.99 / £74.99 / €84.99. One of them is much harder to buy than the other, and neither has an equivalent on Xbox.

Sony published the reveal on the PlayStation Blog and showed the pads during that day's State of Play. Rockstar did not announce them; this is a Sony hardware release carrying Rockstar's game on it, which is worth keeping straight when working out what it does and does not imply about the game.

The two editions are not equally available

This is the part that decides whether you get one.

The black pad being a PlayStation Direct exclusive is a harder restriction than it sounds, because PlayStation Direct does not operate everywhere. In a country Sony does not run a direct store in, there is no sanctioned route to the black edition at all — not a queue, not a waiting list, nothing. The white one goes through ordinary retail and is the one most buyers will actually be able to find.

Both share the same design language: a shimmering finish that shifts colour under light, moulded palm tree detailing rather than a printed graphic, and a "VI" on the touchpad. The split between them is the same split the game's marketing has leaned on since the first trailer — the neon night and the bright daylight of Vice City — which makes them a matched pair rather than a colour option.

Pre-orders, and what happened to them

Pre-orders opened on 10 September at 7:00am PT / 10:00am ET in the United States and at 10:00am local time in the UK, France, Germany, Austria, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg, through PlayStation Direct in limited quantities.

They did not last. Both editions sold out at several retailers inside a day, and the black edition's initial PlayStation Direct allocation went in hours. Stock has since reappeared intermittently rather than permanently.

Two practical points follow, and they are the useful part of this article:

  • Sony has committed to no restock. Limited-edition DualSense runs have historically seen further waves in the weeks before the game they are tied to, and that is a reasonable expectation rather than a promise. Nothing has been stated.
  • A sold-out listing is not the end of it. These ship on 19 November, not on order, so allocations continue to move between now and launch. Paying above retail in September for an object that will be restocked in November is a choice worth making deliberately.

If you only want a second pad for co-op or as a spare, a standard DualSense does everything this one does. The limited editions carry no exclusive hardware feature, no bundled in-game content and no early access — they are a finish.

The disc it did not get

The interesting thing about this announcement is not the pad. It is the shelf it sits on.

GTA VI ships with no disc. The boxed copy is a download code in a case, and the decision reads as a statement about the end of physical media rather than a manufacturing footnote — Take-Two's chief executive argued in August that discs no longer make sense for a release of this size.

So the physical GTA VI products that exist this November are: a controller, a case with a code in it, and a soundtrack album on CD and vinyl. The game is the one thing on that list you cannot hold.

That is not a contradiction, and it is worth being precise about why. A disc is a delivery mechanism for a download that happens regardless; a controller is a thing with a function. The two decisions are made by different companies for different reasons, and they are individually sensible. They simply add up to a launch where Sony manufactured a physical Grand Theft Auto VI object and Rockstar did not.

It also answers a question the physical edition left open. The expectation was that any physical GTA VI object would end up being merchandise sitting next to a code rather than a box containing a game. That is now exactly what happened, twice over: Rockstar followed these controllers with a $399.99 collector's collection that contains no game at all.

Nothing for Xbox

Microsoft has announced no GTA VI controller. GTA VI launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on the same day, and only one of the two platforms has official hardware for it.

This is not a small asymmetry given that Sony's marketing relationship with the game has been visible since May, when the ESRB rating surfaced through PlayStation's own promotional emails before any board published it. An Xbox pad may still be announced — there are two months left — but nothing supports one today, and the various GTA-themed Xbox controllers currently for sale online are third-party customisations, not licensed products.

Sony's own line has gaps too. New Pulse and Pulse Edge headsets were revealed in mid-September; neither is a GTA VI product, and reporting places them after launch. No console bundle, faceplate or cover in the game's colours has been announced by anyone.

If you play on PC

The pad works; the game does not. A DualSense functions on PC over USB or Bluetooth like any other, so the controller is a usable purchase for a PC player.

GTA VI is not. There is no PC version and no PC date — the position, the precedents and what Rockstar has actually said are in the PC release guide. Buying the controller in November to play the game on PC in November is buying half of something.

What is not confirmed

  • Any restock. The first allocations sold out and Sony has stated nothing about further waves.
  • A PS5 or PS5 Pro console bundle. None announced, by Sony or by Rockstar, with two months to go.
  • Any Xbox controller, official bundle or accessory.
  • A GTA VI headset, faceplate or console cover.
  • Availability of the black edition outside PlayStation Direct territories. There is no announced route.
  • Any in-game content, bonus or early access attached to either controller. None has been mentioned, and none should be assumed.
  • Any connection to the game's contents. The finishes are marketing artwork. They are not a statement about districts, weather or anything else in the world.

The controller is real, dated and priced, which already makes it firmer than most GTA VI news. What it tells you about the game is nothing at all — and two months out from launch on 19 November 2026, it is worth being clear about which of those two things you are reading.

GTA 6: The Album — 34 original tracks, and still not one radio station

Rockstar and Atlantic Records announced Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album on 17 September, with six songs out now and the rest on 19 November. Here is what the announcement actually establishes, why an album of original music is a break with how GTA soundtracks have always worked, and everything about the in-game radio that remains unannounced.

GTA 6 voice cast: one actor is finally on the record

Stephen Root told the Associated Press on 13 September that he is in Grand Theft Auto VI, playing Keys smuggler Brian Heder — the first GTA 6 role any actor has confirmed. Rockstar has still published no cast list. Here is what that one confirmation establishes, which names are still fan identification, and which actors have gone on record to deny being in the game.
