GTA 6's collector's edition costs $399.99 and does not contain the game

Rockstar announced The Goodtime State – Vice City Collection on 24 September. It is eleven pieces of merchandise in a box, it ships on launch day, it is limited to one per customer, and it includes no copy of Grand Theft Auto VI, no download code and no in-game content.

Rockstar has announced a Grand Theft Auto VI collector's edition, and it is not an edition of the game. On 24 September 2026 the studio opened pre-orders for The Goodtime State – Vice City Collection: a box of eleven physical objects, $399.99 / £349.99 / €399.99 / CA$559.99, shipping on 19 November alongside the game, sold only through the Rockstar Store and limited to one per customer.

There is no disc in it, no download code, and no in-game content attached to it. If you buy this box and nothing else, you own a model alligator and no way to play Grand Theft Auto VI.

That is not a criticism of the contents. It is the single most important thing to understand before ordering, and Rockstar has caught buyers out with the same structure once before.

The wording Rockstar used is "while supplies last". That is the only scarcity statement it has made: no production number has been published, and nobody quoting one is quoting Rockstar.

What is in the box

Eleven items, most of them themed on Macca the Gator, a television programme within Leonida's fiction:

Item
Macca the Gator figure
Oakley Frogskins sunglasses
Leonida Keys crossbody bag
New Era 9FORTY snapback hat
Macca the Gator magnetic mirror
Chunkee the Manatee shot glass
Vice City collectible swizzle spoon
Vice City razor blade keychain
Leonida Keys enamel pin set in a metal tin
Leonida Keys sticker pack in a stash bag
Double-sided souvenir poster with a map of Leonida

Two licensed products in there are doing real work on the price. Oakley lists Frogskins at £137–£160 depending on the lens, though they are routinely sold for less, and a plain New Era 9FORTY sells for around $28 before anyone prints a logo on it. Whatever you make of the other nine objects, the box is not $400 of printed tat.

The naming is worth a moment too. Four of the eleven items carry the Leonida Keys name rather than Vice City's — the island chain at the bottom of the map where Jason lives and where the smuggling economy runs. Rockstar is selling merchandise for a region rather than for the city, which is a slightly odd choice for a collection with Vice City in its title, and a reasonable hint about how much of the game happens outside the city.

The spoon

The one item generating more discussion than the price is the swizzle spoon, and the reason is historical. A gold-coloured collectible spoon was produced as promotional merchandise around The Ballad of Gay Tony in 2009; surviving examples now change hands for very large sums, and GamesRadar has pointed out that the Vice City spoon is the same object in a different finish.

Rockstar has not described it as a callback. The resemblance is an observation made by people who own or covet the original, not a claim the studio has made, and the 2009 spoon's resale prices are auction anecdotes rather than a published market.

Rockstar has done this before

The game-less collector's box is not new. In 2018, Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped a Collector's Box at $99.99 containing no game and no digital content — a metal case with a challenge coin, a bandana, a puzzle, playing cards, cigarette cards and a replica catalogue. It confused people then, and outlets covering it spent most of their word count telling readers to buy a copy of the game separately.

What has changed is the price and the alternative. In 2018 a buyer who wanted objects and a game could pick the Special Edition, or bundle the Collector's Box with the Ultimate Edition. This time there is no game-bearing physical product to bundle with, because the boxed game itself contains no disc — only a download code, which we covered in what is actually in the physical box. Once the physical product is a card with a number on it, there is nothing for a collector's tin to be built around. Rockstar's answer was to stop pretending and sell the objects on their own, at four times what the Red Dead box cost.

So the full set of ways to spend money on Grand Theft Auto VI before launch now looks like this:

PriceContains the game
Standard edition$79.99Yes
Ultimate edition$99.99Yes
The Goodtime State – Vice City Collection$399.99No
DualSense limited-edition controllers$84.99 eachNo

The two editions that do contain the game are unchanged, and the difference between them is still $20 of bonus content — the editions guide goes through whether that gap is worth paying. Sony's pair of limited-edition DualSense controllers were the first official physical GTA VI object to go on sale; this is the second, and neither is a game.

What is not confirmed

  • Availability outside North America and Europe. Rockstar says pre-order details for Asia, Latin America and Australia are still to come. It has not said the collection will be sold there.
  • Quantities. "While supplies last" is not a number.
  • Whether it will be restocked. Nothing has been said either way.
  • Shipping costs and delivery windows. The collection is excluded from free shipping; the charge depends on destination and was not published as a figure.
  • Whether Macca the Gator is watchable in-game. Rockstar describes it as a Leonida television show. That it appears on an in-game TV set is a reasonable assumption and nothing more — no footage of it has been shown.
  • Any bundle pairing the collection with a copy of the game. None has been announced, and at one per customer the collection cannot be combined into one.

Should you buy it

Only if you already have a copy of the game on order and you want the objects for their own sake. That is a genuine reason and a fairly common one — people buy band merchandise without expecting a record inside the hoodie.

What makes this one awkward is the name. Every outlet is calling it a collector's edition because that is the shelf it sits on, and a shopper who buys "the collector's edition" on 24 September expecting to be covered for launch day will be standing on 19 November with a shot glass. Order the game separately. The price guide has the two editions that actually include it.

For everyone else, the poster is the tell. A double-sided souvenir print with a map of Leonida is the item in the box with the longest half-life — and it is the one thing here you can have for nothing, because our map of Leonida is the same territory with everything found in it so far marked on it.

GTA 6: The Album — 34 original tracks, and still not one radio station

Rockstar and Atlantic Records announced Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album on 17 September, with six songs out now and the rest on 19 November. Here is what the announcement actually establishes, why an album of original music is a break with how GTA soundtracks have always worked, and everything about the in-game radio that remains unannounced.

GTA 6 voice cast: one actor is finally on the record

Stephen Root told the Associated Press on 13 September that he is in Grand Theft Auto VI, playing Keys smuggler Brian Heder — the first GTA 6 role any actor has confirmed. Rockstar has still published no cast list. Here is what that one confirmation establishes, which names are still fan identification, and which actors have gone on record to deny being in the game.
