What time does GTA 6 unlock? Preload is confirmed, the launch time is not

Preload opens 12 November and launch is 19 November — but Rockstar has not said what time the game actually unlocks. Here's both scenarios, what each means for your timezone, and why the per-country tables circulating are unreliable.

Two different questions get mixed together here, and only one of them has an answer.

Preload is confirmed: 12 November, a week before launch, for anyone who has pre-ordered digitally. The unlock time is not confirmed. Rockstar has said 19 November and nothing more precise, and until they do, no one knows what time you will actually be able to press play.

That matters more than it sounds, because the two plausible models produce different answers — and in some regions, different dates.

The two scenarios

Midnight local time. Every region unlocks at 00:00 on 19 November on its own clock. Tokyo plays while London is still on the 18th, and everyone gets the same experience relative to their own midnight. This is how Rockstar handled the pre-order rollout — pre-orders opened at midnight local time on 25 June, which is the closest thing to a behavioural hint available.

A single global unlock. Everyone gets in at the same instant worldwide, widely reported as 05:00 UTC on 19 November — which is midnight US Eastern. Under this model your local unlock time depends entirely on your offset from UTC, and North American players on the west coast get in during the evening of the 18th.

Rockstar has confirmed neither. Both were being reported as fact by different sites before any evidence for either existed, which is how you can tell that neither was sourced — see the update at the end of this page for what has changed since.

What each would mean for you

Under midnight local, the answer is trivial: 00:00 on 19 November, wherever you are.

Under a 05:00 UTC global unlock, it looks like this:

RegionUnlock time
Los Angeles (PST)9:00 PM, 18 November
Chicago (CST)11:00 PM, 18 November
New York (EST)Midnight, 19 November
London (GMT)5:00 AM, 19 November
Paris / Berlin (CET)6:00 AM, 19 November
Delhi (IST)10:30 AM, 19 November
Tokyo (JST)2:00 PM, 19 November
Sydney (AEDT)4:00 PM, 19 November
Auckland (NZDT)6:00 PM, 19 November

The practical difference is largest at the edges. A west-coast player gains most of an evening under the global model and loses it under midnight local. A European player either stays up for midnight or wakes up to it at five in the morning — the same event, a very different plan for the night.

If you are booking time off around this, book the 19th and treat anything earlier as a bonus. Whichever model holds, somebody starts the story hours before you do; the spoiler guide works through who is exposed under each and what to switch off beforehand.

Why the per-country tables you are seeing are wrong

There are a lot of pages right now publishing confident hour-by-hour unlock schedules for every country. They are worth ignoring, and there is a quick way to demonstrate why.

A single global unlock is, by definition, one instant. Convert it into any set of timezones and the results must all reconcile back to that instant. The widely-copied tables do not: the same table will list New Zealand at 7:00 PM on 18 November, Japan at 11:00 PM on 18 November, and Hong Kong at midnight on 19 November. Those are three different moments, hours apart. No single unlock produces all three.

They are not decoding a schedule. They are generating plausible-looking numbers around a query that gets a lot of searches, and the arithmetic gives it away.

Getting the preload right

The preload date is the part you can act on, and it has a couple of failure modes worth avoiding.

  • It starts automatically only if your console is set up for it. Rest mode on PS5, or Sleep — the mode Microsoft used to call instant-on — with automatic updates on Xbox. Otherwise it sits waiting until you trigger it manually from your library. The preload guide has the exact settings on both consoles and the ways it goes wrong.
  • Clear the space before the 12th, not the 19th. Rockstar has not published an install size, but the game is large enough that discovering you are short on the morning of launch is a bad way to find out.
  • Physical buyers preload too. The boxed copy is a download code rather than a disc, so redeeming it early puts you in the same preload window as everyone else.
  • Preloaded does not mean playable. The files sit locked until the unlock, whenever that turns out to be.

When we will know

Rockstar has historically confirmed launch timing in the last couple of weeks before release, usually via a Newswire post covering preload and unlock together. Expect the same here — early November, alongside whatever they say about install size.

Update, 9 September: on 8 September, GamesRadar and Kotaku reported that the PlayStation Store's own listing timestamps point to the first model — a rolling unlock at midnight in each region, with the United States treated as one block on Eastern time rather than unlocking coast by coast. That is a store listing, not a Rockstar statement: Rockstar has still confirmed nothing, and the figures being extrapolated from it differ between reports. It is the first real evidence for either scenario, and it favours midnight local. It is not yet an answer.

We will update this page the moment it is announced. For the date itself and the delay history, see the release date guide; if you missed the gameplay reveal in August, our Extended Look breakdown covers what it showed.
