GTA 6 is Game Informer's next cover story, and the details land on 29 September
Game Informer announced on 25 September that Grand Theft Auto VI is its next cover: 14 pages, 12 unseen screenshots, interviews with Rockstar lead designers, and the first mention of Leonida's weather and wildlife systems. Here is what was actually announced, what was only named, and when you can read it.

Grand Theft Auto VI is Game Informer's next cover story, and it goes live on 29 September 2026. The magazine announced it on 25 September, eight weeks before the game ships: fourteen pages, twelve screenshots nobody has seen, interviews with several lead designers at Rockstar, and cover art drawn for the issue by Rockstar itself.
The important thing to be clear about on day one is that the cover story is not out yet. What exists today is an announcement describing what the cover story will contain. Every feature named below has been named by Game Informer and not yet described by anyone — including Rockstar, which has published nothing about the issue on its Newswire at the time of writing.

The three things it says are new
Game Informer's announcement names three subjects as never-before-shared, and names is all it does. They are worth listing precisely because the gap between a named feature and a described one is where most GTA VI misinformation is manufactured.
Advanced weather systems that simulate Florida's less sunny weather phenomena. That is the whole of the claim. It does not say hurricanes, it does not say flooding, it does not say storms change how a mission plays, and it does not say weather is dynamic rather than scripted. Rockstar has shown rain and overcast skies in trailer footage before; whether this is a system with mechanical consequences or a rendering achievement is exactly the question the cover story is presumably there to answer, and it has not answered it yet.
Wildlife across Leonida, native and otherwise, on land, in the air and in the water. "Otherwise" is the interesting word — Florida's invasive species are a running joke in the real state, and the Extended Look already showed manatees in the swamps and birds fighting on a pavement. No species list, no count and no mention of whether any of it can be hunted, fed, fled from or run over has been published. The Grassrivers is the region where this will matter most, and what is known about its alligators and the predators Rockstar says are worse is already collected here.
Rockstar's approach to researching Miami and Florida. This is the softest of the three and probably the most quotable, since it is the part most likely to produce designers explaining why a particular strip mall looks the way it does. It is also the part with the least chance of revealing a mechanic.
This is a familiar beat, and the precedent is specific
Game Informer has done a Grand Theft Auto cover story before, and it mattered. Grand Theft Auto V took the December 2012 cover, issue #236, published on 8 November 2012. It ran eighteen pages — the magazine's biggest cover story to that point — and it was where the three-protagonist structure, the scale of the rebuilt Los Santos and a large amount of mission and map detail were first laid out at length. Rockstar promoted it on its own Newswire.
Two things follow from that, and only one of them is a prediction.
The first is simply a measurement: fourteen pages is a substantial feature, but it is four pages shorter than the GTA V story, and the GTA V story was carrying the game's first real reveal. This one arrives after a 26-minute gameplay showcase, two trailers and a magazine cover story in Dazed. It is a late-cycle press beat, not a curtain-raiser.
The second is that Rockstar mirrored the GTA V cover story on the Newswire, and it may well do the same here. That is a pattern, not an announcement. Nothing has been posted.
Where it sits in the run-up
The pre-launch press has arrived in a clear sequence this year, and the Game Informer issue is the fourth entry in it:
| Date | What it was | |
|---|---|---|
| Extended Look | 27 August 2026 | 26 minutes of PS5 gameplay, Netflix first — broken down here |
| Dazed, autumn 2026 issue | 26 August 2026 | Cover interview with Rockstar staff; source for the character condition systems |
| The Goodtime State collection | 24 September 2026 | A $399.99 box of objects containing no copy of the game |
| Game Informer cover story | 29 September 2026 | Fourteen pages, twelve screenshots, lead designer interviews |
Dazed and Game Informer are aimed at different readers and were given different material, which is worth remembering when the two are compared next week. Dazed got fashion, characters and the "New Idols" framing, with Jason and Lucia on the cover. Game Informer has been given the state itself — the systems underneath the place rather than the people moving through it. If you want to see the territory those systems will run on, our map of Leonida has everything located so far marked on it.
What is not confirmed
- Anything the weather system does. A phrase is not a specification. Treat hurricane claims, flooding claims and dynamic-storm claims as unverified until the issue is out, whoever is making them.
- Any wildlife detail beyond the fact that there is wildlife. No species, no numbers, no interactions.
- That the twelve screenshots are new captures. Game Informer describes them as exclusive and unseen, which is not the same as freshly taken.
- That Rockstar will publish the screenshots itself. It did for GTA V. It has said nothing this time.
- A print date. "In the coming weeks" is the only guidance given.
- Any new information about the PC version. The cover story has not been described as covering it, and Rockstar's position on PC is unchanged.
- Any change to the release date. GTA VI still ships on 19 November 2026, and nothing in this announcement touches the date or its history of moving.
What to do on 29 September
Read the issue before reading the summaries of it. Four days is long enough for the named features above to be rewritten into specifications that nobody at Rockstar has stated, and the weather line in particular is shaped exactly like a claim that gets inflated — a vague phrase about simulating real conditions, in a game set in the state most associated with hurricanes, eight weeks before launch.
We will cover what the issue actually says once it is out, and will correct anything on this page that it contradicts.
