GTA 6 price: $79.99 Standard, $99.99 Ultimate, and what the difference buys

Two editions, two prices, one game. Everything below is what Rockstar has published; the editions guide goes through how to think about the gap in more detail.

The two prices

Prices in other currencies follow the regional pricing of the PlayStation Store and the Microsoft Store. Rockstar has not published a full table, and this page will not invent one.

What the extra $20 buys

Both editions contain the whole game. The Ultimate edition adds bonus content on top. Pre-ordering either edition adds the Vintage Vice City Pack, and pre-ordering the digital Ultimate also adds one month of GTA+, Rockstar's subscription.

The honest framing for a purchase made before anyone has played the game: you are paying $20 for extras you cannot evaluate yet. In Rockstar's previous games, bonus content has meant in-game money, cosmetic items and early unlocks — worth more to someone who plays heavily from day one, close to nothing to someone playing the story once. If an online mode follows, currency and cosmetics tend to matter more there.

The box is a code

Physical copies contain a download code and no disc — Rockstar has confirmed this. Two things follow for the price:

• The boxed edition is Standard only. There is no boxed Ultimate.
• A cheaper box is the same game. Retailers set their own prices on the boxed Standard edition, and since the box redeems to the same digital copy, a retailer discount is a real discount with nothing missing. It is also not a Rockstar price: the official price is $79.99, and a lower figure is the shop's.

There is no resale value either way, so the second-hand price that used to soften a launch purchase does not exist for this one.

Upgrading later

Buy Standard, decide you want the extras, pay the difference in the PlayStation or Microsoft store. There is no penalty for starting cheap.

What is not announced

• Any discount, sale or price change after launch
• Any edition that pairs the collector's collection with a copy of the game
• A PC price — there is no PC version
• The price of anything after launch: expansions, an online mode, GTA+ tiers
