GTA 6 pre-order: where to buy, what you get, and whether it is worth it

Pre-orders opened on Thursday 25 June 2026, at midnight local time, for both editions on both consoles. This page is what pre-ordering gets you and what it does not, so you can decide without a countdown timer doing it for you.

What you get

The preload is the practical benefit. Rockstar has confirmed it opens on 12 November for digital pre-orders, a week before launch, so a pre-ordered copy is downloaded and waiting when the game unlocks. Somebody who buys at midnight on the 19th starts a very large download at that moment instead.

Where to pre-order

Digitally, on the PlayStation Store for PS5 or the Microsoft Store for Xbox Series X|S. This is the only way to buy the Ultimate edition.

Boxed, from any retailer that sells games. The box is the Standard edition and contains a download code rather than a disc — it is the same digital copy with a case around it, and it needs the same download. Retailers set their own price on it, so a box below $79.99 is a shop's discount on the same game, not a different product.

Which edition

Both contain the whole game; the price guide has the two prices side by side. The $20 difference buys bonus content that nobody outside Rockstar has seen in play, so the reasonable rule is Standard, unless you already know you will play heavily from launch night, in which case in-game extras are worth more to you. You can upgrade from Standard to Ultimate later by paying the difference.

Should you pre-order at all

There is no scarcity argument. Digital copies cannot run out, and the boxed copy is a code. Nothing about pre-ordering gets you in earlier than the unlock, and the unlock time itself has not been announced.

So the trade is simple. Pre-order and you play at unlock, with the Vintage Vice City Pack attached. Wait and you keep your money until launch day, then download while everyone else is playing. If you are undecided, waiting costs you exactly that and nothing more.

What is not confirmed

• The unlock time. Midnight local or a single global moment — Rockstar has said neither.
• The install size. Clear the space before 12 November regardless.
• What the Vintage Vice City Pack is worth in play. Nobody has used it yet.
• Anything for PC. There is no PC version and no PC pre-order.
