Is GTA 6 coming to Switch 2? Nintendo was asked, and sent the question to Rockstar
Nintendo of America's president was asked about Grand Theft Auto VI on Switch 2 in an interview published on 9 October 2026, and called it a conversation for Take-Two and Rockstar. Here's what is actually confirmed about the game's platforms, what Rockstar's Nintendo record shows, and why a deferral is not a hint.

The short answer: Grand Theft Auto VI has no announced Nintendo Switch 2 version. It launches on 19 November 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and that is the whole platform list.
What changed this week is only that somebody senior was finally asked. In an interview published on 9 October 2026, Devon Pritchard, president of Nintendo of America, was put the Switch 2 question directly and declined to answer it, saying the matter belonged to the game's publisher. That is now the most authoritative public statement on the subject — and it is worth being clear that an authoritative statement and an informative one are not the same thing.
What was actually said
As reported by VGC, GameSpot, Kotaku and Nintendo Life on the day of publication, Pritchard's answer was:
That's going to be a conversation for Take-Two and Rockstar, but nothing to announce on my end at this time.
Two clauses, and both are doing less than the headlines around them suggest. The first says the decision is not Nintendo's. The second says Nintendo has no announcement — which is what a company says when there is nothing, and also what it says when there is something under embargo.
She was not asked to confirm a port and she did not refuse one. She was asked a question she is not the right person to answer, and said so.
Three readings, all published on the same day
| Outlet | Reading |
|---|---|
| Kotaku | The game will not be on Switch 2 — at launch certainly, and possibly ever |
| Nintendo Life | Not a flat denial, so the possibility survives |
| VGC | Neither Nintendo nor Rockstar has ever suggested a port is planned, or that one is technically feasible |
All three are defensible from the same thirty words, which is the clearest evidence available that the quote settles nothing. Where the coverage goes wrong is the fourth reading, which turned up on several sites within hours: that Pritchard confirmed Switch 2 is capable of running the game. Nothing in the answer touches the hardware. She was asked about a business decision and gave an answer about whose decision it is.
Why Nintendo was the wrong party to ask
Platform availability for a third-party game is the publisher's call. Nintendo can court a publisher, fund a port, or build a marketing beat around one, but it cannot announce a game that Take-Two and Rockstar have not decided to make and ship. Pritchard's answer is procedurally correct rather than evasive.
It is the same structural problem as Xbox's cloud-streaming denial of 7 October, where an executive at a platform holder spoke clearly about his own company and could not, on his own authority, close a question that belongs to Rockstar. Platform holders can describe their hardware. Only the publisher can describe its plans.
The record, in full
| Date | Who | What was said |
|---|---|---|
| December 2023 onwards | Rockstar Games | GTA VI is for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Nintendo hardware has never been mentioned, in any announcement, listing or trailer |
| February 2025 | Strauss Zelnick, Take-Two, on an earnings call | Take-Two "would fully expect to support Switch 2", with "nothing specific to report"; the company has backed Nintendo hardware "when it made sense for the individual release", and would not necessarily bring every title to the platform |
| November 2025 | An insider, reported by GameSpot | Rockstar had been "doing tests" on Switch 2 hardware — with the same report carrying the caveat that testing does not mean a release is planned, and that the current state of the work was unknown |
| 9 October 2026 | Devon Pritchard, Nintendo of America | A conversation for Take-Two and Rockstar; nothing to announce |
| Throughout | Rockstar Games on Switch 2 | Nothing |
The Zelnick line is the one most often quoted as if it were about this game. It is not. It was said in February 2025, four months before Switch 2 existed as a product, it is a statement of general publishing intent of the kind every publisher makes about every new console, and the same answer explicitly reserved the right not to bring everything. Take-Two publishes NBA 2K and Civilization as well as Grand Theft Auto, and "we expect to support the platform" is satisfied by either of them.
What Rockstar's Nintendo record actually shows
This is where the question gets more interesting than the quote, because Rockstar does ship on Nintendo hardware — regularly, and always late.
| Rockstar release | Nintendo version | Gap from original |
|---|---|---|
| L.A. Noire (2011) | Switch, November 2017 | ~6 years |
| GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas | The Trilogy – Definitive Edition, Switch, November 2021 | ~17–20 years |
| Red Dead Redemption (2010) | Switch, August 2023 | ~13 years |
| Red Dead Redemption | Switch 2 Edition, 2 December 2025 — DLSS, HDR, 60fps, free upgrade for Switch owners | ~15 years |
| Grand Theft Auto V (2013) | None | — |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018) | None | — |
Two things follow from that table, and they point in opposite directions.
Rockstar is already a Switch 2 developer. The Red Dead Redemption Switch 2 Edition shipped on 2 December 2025 with DLSS, HDR and a 60fps target, and as a free upgrade for owners of the Switch version. Whatever obstacles exist, "Rockstar does not work on Nintendo hardware" is not one of them.
No mainline Rockstar open-world game has ever launched day-and-date on a Nintendo console, and the two biggest — GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 — have never appeared on one at all. The portable entries that did arrive on schedule, GTA Advance on Game Boy Advance in 2004 and Chinatown Wars on DS in 2009, were built for that hardware from the start rather than scaled down to reach it.
The hardware question, answered honestly
Nobody outside Rockstar has run this game on anything, so nobody outside Rockstar can say what it would take to run it on a handheld. What can be stated is what the hardware is, and what else already runs on it.
Nintendo's published specifications for Switch 2: an Nvidia Ampere-architecture GPU with 1,536 CUDA cores, 12GB of LPDDR5X memory with 9GB available to games, support for DLSS upscaling and ray tracing, output up to 4K at 60fps docked, and a 7.9-inch 1080p screen in handheld mode. Grand Theft Auto VI, by contrast, is built for current-generation consoles alone — no PlayStation 4 or Xbox One version was ever announced, which is itself a break with GTA V, a game that launched on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and reached newer hardware afterwards. Even on the machines it is shipping on, the performance targets Rockstar has described are the subject of an argument about 30fps.
The objection that gets raised next is usually the wrong one. Switch 2 is not short of large, mature, current-generation games. Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition and Hitman: World of Assassination were both there on launch day, 5 June 2025, with VGC counting 17 third-party titles on the day out of 46 confirmed at that point. An M-rated open world with a long tail of content is not a category Nintendo refuses; it is a category Switch 2 launched with.
The more instructive case is Elden Ring. Its Switch 2 version was announced for 2025, slipped to 2026, and arrived on 28 August 2026 — the delay attributed to allowing time for performance adjustments, with handheld performance named as the concern. That is what the real obstacle looks like: not a console that cannot run a demanding open world, but a port that takes an extra year to run it acceptably. Rockstar has never shipped a Grand Theft Auto that way, and it has never been under less commercial pressure to.
So the real question is not whether the console can be made to show Leonida. It is what a version would have to give up, and whether that is a trade Rockstar wants attached to this game's name. The pressure points are the ones this site keeps returning to: the size of the map — you can see the shape of what a port would have to stream on the interactive map — and the crowd and traffic density that Rockstar has spent two years using as its headline feature. Those are the first things to go in a downscale, and they are the things the marketing is built on.
What is rumoured, and what we are not carrying
In November 2025 an insider claimed Rockstar had been testing the game on Switch 2 hardware. GameSpot carried it, and carried the caveat with it: testing is not a plan, and the source said he did not know where the work stood. VGC has since reported that some insiders describe exploratory conversations behind the scenes. Both are second-hand, both are unconfirmed, and neither has produced anything from Rockstar.
A further set of claims — that technical hurdles have been cleared, that outside port specialists have been hired, that a version exists but will not arrive at launch — circulates only on sites this page does not cite. It is not carried here, and nobody should plan a hardware purchase around it.
Confirmed, or not
| Claim | Status |
|---|---|
| GTA VI launches 19 November 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S | Confirmed by Rockstar |
| A Switch 2 version | Not announced |
| Nintendo has ruled out a Switch 2 version | No — it declined to answer |
| Rockstar or Take-Two have commented on Switch 2 and GTA VI | No |
| Take-Two expects to support Switch 2 as a platform | Said by Zelnick in February 2025, about no specific game |
| Rockstar develops for Switch 2 | Yes — Red Dead Redemption Switch 2 Edition, December 2025 |
| Rockstar has tested GTA VI on Switch 2 | Insider claim only, with the source's own caveat attached |
| Switch 2 is technically capable of running GTA VI | Never established by anyone, in either direction |
| A PC version | Still not announced |
What is still not confirmed
- Whether a Switch 2 version exists in any form, including as an internal prototype. Testing hardware is a normal engineering activity and proves nothing about intent.
- Whether Rockstar has been asked and said no. Nintendo's answer is consistent with a refusal, with an ongoing negotiation, and with nobody having raised it.
- What a port would cost in content. No technical analysis exists, because no one outside Rockstar has the game.
- Any timing. If a version is ever announced, Rockstar's record on Nintendo hardware is measured in years after the original release, not months.
- Whether Rockstar will address platforms again before launch. It has not commented on one since the date moved, and nothing obliges it to.
If you are buying hardware in order to play this game on 19 November, the list of machines that will run it is two items long, and it has not changed since December 2023. Everything else — PC, cloud, Nintendo — is a question that the only company able to answer has chosen not to.
Sourcing note: variety.com, videogameschronicle.com, gamespot.com, kotaku.com, nintendolife.com and rockstargames.com are all refused by this writer's network, so nothing above was read first-hand. Pritchard's quote is reproduced as VGC, GameSpot, Kotaku and Nintendo Life rendered it on 9 October 2026; at least one outlet gives a slightly different wording of the same answer, and the Variety interview itself could not be opened. The Zelnick remarks are from Take-Two's February 2025 earnings call as reported at the time. The Red Dead Redemption Switch 2 details are from GameSpot's and VGC's coverage of Rockstar's announcement of 13 November 2025, and the Switch 2 launch line-up from VGC's count. The Elden Ring Tarnished Edition dates — announced for 2025, delayed in October 2025 for performance work, released 28 August 2026 — are from VGC's and Nintendo Life's coverage of those announcements. Switch 2 specifications are Nintendo's published figures as collated by Nintendo Life. The insider claims are attributed where they were carried by a named outlet and omitted where they were not.

GTA 6 scams: there is no demo, no beta and no early access — and the "installer" is 1.1 MB
Local television in Miami warned about fake Grand Theft Auto VI early-access offers on 18 October. Rockstar has released no demo, no beta and no PC build, preload does not open until 12 November, and the file sold as a GTA 6 installer is 1.1 MB of password-stealing malware. What exists, what cannot, and what to do if you ran one.

The Game Awards has published its 2026 cutoff, and GTA 6 clears it with a day to spare
The Game Awards 2026 requires a game to be commercially available by 9pm PT on Friday 20 November. Grand Theft Auto VI ships on 19 November, so it is eligible. But nominees are announced in mid-November, before anyone outside Rockstar has played it — and that, not the cutoff, is what decides whether it reaches a ballot.

Does GTA 6 have a first-person mode? Rockstar has never answered the question
No trailer, screenshot, interview or store listing from Rockstar mentions a camera mode. A creator shown the game at Rockstar North says there is none at launch beyond weapon aiming; footage taken from a development build is said to show first-person driving. Here is the record, the GTA V and Red Dead 2 precedent, and why neither claim settles it.
