The Miami Heat become Vice City on 18 November — and Rockstar's name is finally on the campaign
The Heat announced 'A Night in Vice City' on 2 October: a custom court, a uniform never worn before, and a Bucks game on ESPN the night before GTA 6 launches. The detail that matters is the billing — Rockstar is named as a partner, after weeks of saying nothing about the deals that put its logo on Miami.

On 2 October the Miami Heat announced that on 18 November they will play a home game as Vice City. The opponent is the Milwaukee Bucks, the venue is the Kaseya Center, the game goes out nationally on ESPN, and it falls on the eve of Grand Theft Auto VI's release. The team is calling it A Night in Vice City: a court built for the occasion, a uniform the franchise has never worn, and a merchandise line to go with both.
The event is straightforward. The interesting part is the credit line. For six weeks Miami has been filling up with Grand Theft Auto branding paid for through municipal agreements, and through all of it Rockstar itself had published nothing — no statement, no Newswire post, nothing confirming the campaign existed. The Heat's announcement names Rockstar Games as a partner. That is the first time the studio's name has been attached in public to any part of the Miami campaign.
What the Heat have actually announced
| Event | A Night in Vice City |
| Date | Wednesday 18 November 2026, the night before launch |
| Fixture | Miami Heat (as Vice City) v Milwaukee Bucks |
| Venue | Kaseya Center, Miami |
| Broadcast | National television on ESPN |
| Tip-off | Reported as 7:00pm ET — the Heat's announcement did not lead on a time |
| On court | A one-off court, described as never seen before |
| Uniform | A new uniform, stated as never previously worn |
| Also promised | "Unique game-night programming and live activations", not yet described |
| Merchandise | A Vice City collection through the team's Court Culture line, in store and online |
| Tickets | On sale |
| Announced by | The Miami Heat, naming Rockstar Games as partner |
That is the whole of it. The Heat have described the shape of the night and held back the contents, which is normal for an in-arena promotion six weeks out and is also why there is not much more to say about what will happen on the floor.
Why the billing is the story
The Miami campaign so far has been documented entirely from the other side. Miami-Dade County is collecting $975,000 for the WELCOME TO VICE CITY letters that went onto the Kaseya Center roof on 22 September, signed off by the mayor under delegated authority with no board vote. Miami Beach voted 4-3 to take at least $3 million more for branding on its beach furniture from 15 October. Every figure, date and objection in that story came from county and city records or from reporters in the room. Rockstar said nothing at any point — which left the odd situation of the only party paying for the campaign being the only one not describing it.
The Heat announcement changes that in one narrow respect and no more. Rockstar is now a named partner in a publicised Grand Theft Auto event in Miami. It has still said nothing about the rooftop sign, nothing about the beach deal, and nothing about the sums involved in either. A sponsor credit in a basketball team's press release is not a statement about a municipal contract, and it should not be read as one.
It is worth being plain about the limits here, too. The announcement came from the Heat, through the team's own channels. We could not read Rockstar's Newswire first-hand, and no reporting describes a post there.
The uniform is older than the game
A pink-and-blue Heat jersey is not by itself a Grand Theft Auto crossover, and anyone treating the look as a reveal has the chronology backwards.
The Heat's Vice uniforms arrived as the team's 2017-18 City Edition, built from a script wordmark modelled on the old Miami Arena's signage with fluorescent pink and blue trim. They were popular enough to run: Vice Nights in black and Sunset Vice in pink the following season, ViceWave in blue after that, then ViceVersa — five designs across four seasons, all of them referring to Miami Vice and the city's own 1980s palette rather than to a video game that had not been announced.
So the aesthetic the two parties are meeting on is one the Heat established nine years ago and that Vice City has drawn from since 1986. What is new on 18 November is a specific uniform made for a specific night, and the team says it has not been worn before.
What has not been settled is whether that uniform is the Heat's 2026-27 City Edition kit or a separate one-off. The team has used the Vice City name for its own uniform programme this season, and the announcement does not say which of the two is being unveiled. Until the Heat publish the design, treat the two as distinct possibilities.
What it costs
The merchandise is where the scale of the thing shows. The Court Culture collection runs from roughly $45 to $110 — t-shirts, a hoodie, a crewneck, dad caps and snapbacks — and the items that drew comment were a $55 shirt reading "Went to Vice City and all I got was this lousy t-shirt" and a $45 "I love Vice City". Kotaku's write-up of the announcement led on the pricing, which is a fair reading: a one-night tie-in with a $55 novelty tee is a merchandising exercise before it is anything else.
Ticket prices for the game itself have not been published alongside the announcement, and a nationally televised home game the night before the biggest entertainment release of the year is not likely to be cheap.
This tells you nothing about the game
It needs saying, because the week's coverage has blurred it. No part of this is a Grand Theft Auto VI announcement. Nothing about the map, the content, the release plan or the features has moved. VI was finished long before a basketball team booked a court design, and a rebranded fixture is a billboard, not a crossover.
The adjacency people keep reaching for is the arena. Rockstar's own still of downtown Vice City shows a lit arena on the waterfront signed Sahara Arena, on the stretch of shoreline the real Kaseya Center occupies. Rockstar has never said the Sahara Arena stands for the Kaseya Center. That was a reader's inference from a published image three weeks ago and it is still a reader's inference now; the real building hosting a themed fixture does not make it a confirmation.

What is still not confirmed
- The money. The two municipal deals are public records because governments signed them. The Heat are a private business, so this agreement is not, and neither side has disclosed a figure. Do not assume it sits in the same range as the $975,000 roof.
- What happens in the arena. "Programming and activations" covers everything from a trailer on the jumbotron to playable stations in the concourse. The team says it will detail this later.
- Whether any VI content appears. No footage, no reveal and no announcement has been tied to the date. The game ships the next morning; there is nothing obvious left to show.
- Whether this is the end of the campaign. Miami Beach's branding window runs to 31 December, the pitched "Vice City Motor Fest" has never been scheduled, and nobody has published a calendar of what else is coming.
For what is actually known about the city this is all named after, the districts Rockstar has named and the real places the map is built from are the firmer ground. The game arrives on 19 November, about fifteen hours after the final buzzer.
