GTA 6 is on no Golden Joystick ballot, and it is a calendar problem rather than a verdict
The Golden Joystick Awards 2026 nominations landed on 25 September with Grand Theft Auto VI absent from all 21 categories, including the Most Wanted Game award it won in 2024 and 2025. Here is why it is out, which awards it is still eligible for, and what The Game Awards on 10 December actually turns on.

The Golden Joystick Awards published their 2026 nominations on 25 September, and Grand Theft Auto VI is not in any of the 21 categories. Not Console Game of the Year, not Best Storytelling, and not Most Wanted Game — the award it won in 2024 and again in 2025.
Nothing has gone wrong. The game ships on 19 November 2026, eight days after the ceremony on 11 November, and every vote that decides the night closes weeks before that. An award show cannot give Game of the Year to a game nobody outside Rockstar has played.
That is worth stating plainly, because the absence is already being read as a snub, and over the next eleven weeks it will be read as evidence of a delay. It is neither. It is the arithmetic of a November release date meeting an awards calendar built around October voting.
What was actually announced
| Status | |
|---|---|
| Golden Joystick Awards 2026 nominations published | Confirmed, 25 September 2026 |
| Number of categories | 21 |
| Ceremony | 11 November 2026, Troxy in London, streamed |
| Public voting opens | 25 September 2026 |
| Public voting closes | 23 October 2026, 4pm PT / 7pm ET / midnight BST |
| Ultimate Game of the Year shortlist | 26 October 2026, with voting 26–30 October |
| Grand Theft Auto VI on any ballot | No |
| A reason published by the Golden Joysticks for the omission | None |
| Any change to the 19 November release date | No |
The ballot is led by 007: First Light and Big Walk, with Resident Evil: Requiem close behind. Most Wanted Game — the category for games still ahead of the audience — went to a shortlist of other unreleased titles, among them Fable, Persona 6 and The Witcher 4.
Why it is out, precisely
The Golden Joysticks have not published a rule naming GTA VI, so the mechanism has to be read off the dates, and the dates are unambiguous. Voting in the main categories runs from 25 September to 23 October. Ultimate Game of the Year is decided between 26 and 30 October. The winners are announced on 11 November. Grand Theft Auto VI does not exist as something a voter can play on any of those days.
It is worth noting that the show moved. The 2025 ceremony was held on 20 November, nine days later in the month than this year's; a 2026 edition in the same slot would have landed the day after GTA VI shipped. That would have changed nothing, because the voting still closes in October, and it is the vote rather than the ceremony that does the excluding.
The Most Wanted Game omission is the only part that takes a second look, since that category exists specifically for unreleased games and GTA VI has won it twice running. The show has said nothing about it. The obvious reading is that a category asking what you are looking forward to stops making sense for a game that arrives eight days after the question is answered — but that is inference from the shape of the category, not a stated rule, and it should be carried as inference.
The awards it is still eligible for
The framing that travelled fastest on 25 September was that GTA VI cannot complete the "Big Five" sweep — Golden Joysticks, The Game Awards, DICE, the GDC Awards and BAFTA — that Baldur's Gate 3 and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 both managed in a single season. That is true, and it is also the least interesting thing about the situation, because losing one of the five does not remove the other four.
| Award | Ceremony | Where GTA VI stands |
|---|---|---|
| Golden Joystick Awards 2026 | 11 November 2026 | Out. Voting closes before launch |
| The Game Awards 2026 | 10 December 2026 | Eligibility dates not yet published — see below |
| BAFTA Games Awards 2027 | 14 April 2027 | In window. Eligibility runs 15 November 2025 – 19 November 2026 |
| D.I.C.E. Awards, 30th | 18 February 2027 | In window on the Academy's calendar-year rule; submissions close 8 December 2026 |
| Golden Joystick Awards 2027 | Autumn 2027 | Eligible, a year late |
The BAFTA line is the one to sit with. The 2027 eligibility window ends on 19 November 2026 — GTA VI's release date, to the day, the last game in under the wire. The entry deadline for anything released between 1 August and 19 November is Friday 6 November 2026, which means Rockstar has to submit the game a fortnight before anyone can buy it, and the BAFTA longlist is published on 8 December 2026, nineteen days after launch. None of that requires a review to have run. It requires a form.
The Game Awards is the one that is genuinely open
The Game Awards 2026 takes place on Thursday 10 December at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Its eligibility dates for this year have not been published; the show has said they arrive in the autumn.
If the cutoff follows the pattern it has used before — the 2025 show required release by 21 November, and the rule of thumb is the third Friday in November, which in 2026 is the 20th — then GTA VI clears it by one day. That is the whole story, and it is a projection, not a rule. Nobody at The Game Awards has confirmed a 2026 cutoff date.
Even if the date holds, eligibility is not the binding constraint. Nominees in most categories are chosen by a jury of more than a hundred outlets, and juries vote on ballots that go out before the ceremony, not on the morning of it. A game released on 19 November is eligible for a 10 December show only in a sense that matters if the people voting have played it, which in practice means review code arriving well before the public date. Rockstar has announced nothing about review copies, embargoes or an early press window, and its recent pattern — no cast list, no install size, a press cycle it controls end to end, most recently the Game Informer cover story landing on 29 September — gives no indication either way.
So the honest position is that GTA VI is probably eligible for The Game Awards 2026 and may well not be nominated, for a reason that has nothing to do with the game.
What it has already won while unreleased
The trophies GTA VI holds today were all won for not existing yet, which is the joke underneath this entire story:
| Award | Year | What for |
|---|---|---|
| Golden Joystick, Most Wanted Game | 2024 | Unreleased |
| Golden Joystick, Most Wanted Game | 2025 | Unreleased, and delayed again since |
| Golden Joystick, Best Game Trailer | 2025 | Trailer 2 |
| The Game Awards, Most Anticipated Game | 2024 | Unreleased |
| The Game Awards, Most Anticipated Game | 2025 | Unreleased |
Two of those repeats exist because the game moved. A title that had shipped on its original schedule could not have won Most Anticipated twice, and the delay timeline is the reason it did.
The performer categories are where the 2027 shows get interesting, and where this site still cannot help you. BAFTA and DICE both award performances; Rockstar has published no cast list at all, and the only actor on the record put himself there. Eleven characters have bios and none has a credited performer — the character records we keep name every figure Rockstar has described, and not one of them names who plays them.
What is not confirmed
- That GTA VI is eligible for The Game Awards 2026. The show has not published its 2026 cutoff. Every claim that it makes the window by one day is extrapolated from last year's date.
- That it will be nominated anywhere this December. Eligibility and nomination are different questions, and the second one depends on review code nobody has announced.
- Any reason for the Most Wanted Game omission. The Golden Joysticks have given none.
- That Rockstar has entered, or will enter, GTA VI for BAFTA 2027. Entry is an act by the publisher, with a deadline of 6 November. Nothing has been said.
- That any of this indicates a delay. It does not. The release date is unchanged, and an awards calendar has no bearing on it.
- Review embargo timing, or whether one exists. No date, no policy, nothing.
What to watch, and when
Three dates decide the rest of it. 6 November is BAFTA's entry deadline, which passes quietly whether or not Rockstar acts. Some time this autumn The Game Awards publishes its eligibility cutoff, and that single line settles the December question. 8 December brings the BAFTA longlist, and by then the game will have been out for nineteen days.
Until then, the useful thing to know is that an empty ballot on 25 September says nothing about the game — and that if you are avoiding everything until launch anyway, the awards conversation is one more feed to mute, alongside the rest of it.
